Which credit items can be disputed?

The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to dispute any credit report items which you believe to be inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable.

Inaccurate credit items are self-explanatory. These are items in your credit reports that simply should not be there or include details that are incorrect. Such items may include improper reporting by creditors, dated information, duplicate entries, or items added to the wrong credit reports.

Incomplete items are those items in your credit reports that give the wrong impression regarding the facts surrounding the items. These items give lenders and others an unfair sense of you as a consumer.

Unverifiable credit items are items which cannot be confirmed as belonging to you. Items may be unverifiable when a creditor goes out of business or is otherwise unable to substantiate that the specific item is part of your credit history.
